Spring Term
I really can not believe that the Spring Term is nearly over, it feels like it was christmas just a few weeks ago. This term has been hard work and I have struggled. There has been alot going on with my home life recently which has made it hard being at uni away from everything and not being there for my family when they need me to. I have enjoyed this term and really feel like I have made some amazing friends, which I feel will always be there. Only two weeks left and then comes our last term of our first year it seems really wierd that we have nearly finished the first year. I remember thinking in the begining of the year that it would drag and that I hated it and just wanted to go home but I am pleased that I stuck it out and learnt so much in such a short period of time, made so many freinds and just really enjoyed myself. I am pround that i have achieved this year with living away from home and my uni work. I am really excited about next term as we have our placements and i will be working at warehouse head office doing Lectra pattern cutting. I am nervous but really excited at the same time. I am looking forward to the summer but i am gonna miss everyone when we all go home. Its gonna be strange not seeing everyone every day at uni.
Sport Vs Fashion
Our project sport vs fashion was hard to get my head round at the begining. We then went to visit the V&A to see the Sport Vs Fashion exhibition, I really enjoyed the exhibition and it got me thinking about all the things that I could do, it also made me realise that fashion and sport do come together, as before I thought that sport was a seperate thing and it was all to do with its specific function and the performance of it, rather than fashion I now know that it can be both and they work well together.
It took a while to get the project started, but once it was goning it seemed to go well. I enjoyed researching different designers collaborations and different performance fabrics. i decided to base my outfit on Rugby as i have been brought up with the sport as all my family plays it and i also used to. I found that there is not much out there for womens rugby and it is very much like the mens kit. I also found that fashion did not really play a part in the kit for rugby. I found this a good opportunity to explore what I could do with garments for womens rugby.
While doing this project I was talking about it down my local rugby club and i was then asked by the people that sell the kit could look at my designs or come up with one for the women at the rugby club. So when i had made my toile i took it down there and showed them and they really liked it so they now want my designs and flat drawings and a tolie to take to their manufacturers to be produced to sell for Bognor Rugby Club. i was really proud and pleased that they liked my work and want to use it.
Lectra Pattern Cutting
Lectra is the main developer for software and hardware for fashion and textiles. Lectra also provide educational packages. The company started in 1973 in France, it is now well established in the UK. Many high street businesses would struggle with out the use of CAD and CAM. It today’s fashion world many companies are using the software programmes; there are many different programmes available so even the smaller businesses can use the technology. To use this technology and really benefit from it you would still need to have the skills to do it manually. With Lectra you can make decisions early in the development process, you can re-use artwork, different blocks and ideas, it saves time therefore money; it also reduces human error and reduces sampling costs. With Lectra companies can share information quickly and easily with other people in the industry. It can also save courier costs.
There are many different programmes; there is textiles design for prints, knits and woven’s. It does one button repeats, it can develop your designs in repeat, and does colour management. It saves time, speeds up or eliminates repetitive jobs, it gives the designer more time to be creative, and has better communication. Fashion design can create range plans, do fashion illustrations, theme boards and specifications. It has tools for fashion sketching, symmetry, stitch lines, it also has style libraries. It saves time and makes fast amendments, automatic updating, and has searchable files and a complete archive. It also is better for communication and can help make faster decisions. Modaris 3D can shorten the lead lines. Can do 2D patterns or can have 3D mannequins. Holds fabric information and mechanical fabric properties. It also has professional fitting tools. It has an optimized product specification. Modaris also cost effective and can save up to 2-3 weeks in development time. In manufacturing with the Lectra software and hardware it can plan markers, it optimizes fabric usage, the machines can load the tables cut the fabric and off load the tables. It cuts faster and more fabric. It also slows down when the pieces are closer together to be more accurate around them. It can tell where the motifs are and where they need to be. It also can e-mail the staff for support. Modaris is the programme that is used to produce patterns. It makes patterns more accurate and faster to create. You can digitise patters and shapes in to create a more advance pattern or to adapt a block. Patterns can also be graded by using this software. Communication is simple and easy.
I have really enjoyed using Modaris, I found that I seemed to pick it up quite well and have been able to complete all my tasks. I think it is a bit tricky to use and there are a lot of functions to get used to but in time and with practise they would come eventually. I feel it ensures that my patterns are a lot more accurate and simple processes are a lot faster e.g. adding seam allowances and pivoting darts. I also found that when it printed out of the plotter it was quick to pull apart which saved on cutting time as it was already perforated.
To get to know more about Modaris and learn more on the programe I decided to do my patterns for my sport vs fashion project on modaris. I digitised different shapes in for my panels and used a block that was already saved on the system. i struggled at first, but i soon got the hang of it and managed to finish my pattern. i also now need to go back after my toile review and do a few symple alterations to the pattern, this will now be a much quicker process.

Illustrator
In my IT lessons we learnt how to use illustrator. It was very hard to get the hang of and I struggled a lot. I enjoyed using it once i got the hang of the program and was quite impressed with what i had managed to achieve. The first thing I done on illustrator was to create the symbols on cards like clubs, hearts, diamonds and spades. we then progressed to trying to create a t-shirt and then other garments such as a shirt and a pair of jeans.

Transfering from writen diary
Induction Week
The first day of induction week was quite daunting. Once I got talking to people I found it a lot easier, and the nerves wore off. It was a hard week as I felt very home sick. I found the group exercise fun and a good chance to get to know other people in the class. I really enjoyed making the dress out of bubble wrap.
Freshers Week (first week of lessons)
It got easier after being there a week and was starting to make more friends and get to know people better. It was good to learn knew things like pattern cutting and how to use the indusrial sewing machines, i had used a sewing machine before but i found the industrial ones a lot harder to use. i dint get to go to many of the freshers vents as I went home the weekend of freshers bacuse it was my friends 18th and I was feeling really home sick. As the first week past I started to get used to being away from home and being at the aib.
